ORNAMENTS
The 2010 ornament is of the S.S. Tarpon.
SS Tarpon
was a twin-screw steamer built in 1887 and owned by the Pensacola, St. Andrews &
Gulf Steamship Co. Tarpon faithfully served as a lifeline to this
area with Capt. Willis G. Barrow at the helm. From 1903 to 1937 she made 1,735
weekly trips between Mobile, Pensacola, St. Andrews, Panama City, Millville,
Apalachicola and Carrabelle but sank in a gale on September 1, 1937.
Tarpon, a favorite of divers, became Florida’s sixth State Underwater
Archaeological Preserve in 1997 and was listed on the National Register of
Historic Places in 2001.
These are collectable
ornaments of historic buildings located within Bay County. The ornaments
are made of solid brass and finished in 24 karat gold. It is the
intent of the Society to add an additional building each year. The
ornaments are available for a minimum donation of $20.00. They may be
obtained at the Society meetings, the History Room of the Bay County Library and
by mail order from the Society.
